Car Engines

Car engines are usually air breathing engines and are also called as internal combustion engines. An internal combustion engine is one which produces the required power through the combustion of a fuel which occurs in the presence of an oxidizer inside a combustion chamber. The gases inside the internal combustion engine expand because of the high temperature and pressure produced in the combustion process. These expanded gases in turn force the movable component of the engine to move over a certain distance in order to generate the useful mechanical power for the car. The movable component mentioned above may be some pistons inside the cylinders or turbine blades.

The term internal combustion engines may be commonly used to refer to the four stroke engines as well as two stroke engines both of which have pistons. Four stroke engines are the engines largely used in cars, trucks, motorcycles, aircraft, etc which are produced now. These engines follow the four stroke principle for the production of the essential mechanical energy. The four stroke refers to four processes called intake, compression, combustion and exhaust.

During the first step called intake, the intake valve in the cylinder opens and fuel air mixture gets into the cylinder. Then in the second step called compression, the piston inside the cylinder moves upward compressing the air fuel mixture to about one eighth or one tenth of its original capacity. Then in the third step called combustion, the spark plug ignites the thus compressed air fuel mixture which in turn produces the power required to move the car. So this step is also called as the power step. In the final step called exhaust, the remaining smoke formed as the result of combustion leaves the cylinder with a great force.

This produces the sound which we can hear when driving the car. These steps are repeated in every cylinder located in the engine. By using certain techniques such as turbocharging and supercharging, the power efficiency is increased. This four stroke engine is further classified into two types namely, petrol engine and diesel engine. The petrol car engines are also called as gasoline engines. Here a spark plug is used to ignite the air fuel mixture. But in the case of diesel engines, the heat of compression is used to ignite of the air fuel mixture.

There is another type of car engine called middle engine design. In a middle engine car, the engine is placed in between the front and the rear wheel axles in order to create a beneficial weight distribution in the car. And in a rear engine car, the engine is placed in the back portion of the car.
